Even before COVID, street dogs in Greece had a hard life, were routinely abused, and used as a target practice for malevolent drivers. Now, Greece has announced another national COVID lockdown and winter is coming…

Street dogs are facing pure misery!

Our hearts go out to street dogs in Greece. There are 2,000 street dogs in an area near Athens called Aspropyrgos who face little chance of making it through this winter without your help.

While many Greeks are animal lovers, an unpleasant minority are not and treat dogs with horrifying cruelty. Frequently, dog owners who tire of their pets simply dump them and leave them to fend for themselves. Semi-rural Aspropyrgos is a favorite dumping ground. The 2,000+ street dogs who live there are the offspring of abandoned pets left to breed litter after litter of unwanted pups. They get no medical treatment and no love, just continual abuse and lives of fear.

Drivers routinely mow street dogs down if they wander on to a road!
Terrible cruelty is commonplace!

We help dogs who have been beaten until their limbs break, poisoned dogs and starved dogs. This is the daily reality of their lives.

Poor dogs. It just keeps getting worse for them. Many dogs rely on kind workers who share their lunch with street dogs or bring them treats from home. But Greece has gone into a second national lockdown because of COVID. This means less food for street dogs and no love at all. We animal lovers all know that love is as important to dogs as food!

To add insult to injury, the coming winter is likely to be particularly harsh. Weather forecasting service AccuWeather predicts that Athens is in for a particularly damaging winter, and that’s bad news for street dogs who have no shelter at all. Many will get sick, and sickly street dogs are not in good shape to survive the weather heading their way.

2,000 street dogs need food to get them through winter!

With our partner Ghost Dogs of Aspropyrgos and the help of animal lovers like you, we have promised to feed street dogs throughout the coming winter, no matter how tough the conditions are.

It is a massive challenge…
but with your help, we will feed these poor innocent animals!

The situation is really worrying because — quite literally — thousands of dogs will depend on us for a daily meal. We need your help to get as many dogs as possible through the wet and cold Athens winter.

Dogs like Willy, who we rescued recently…

Poor Willy was skeletal when we found him, covered with mange and so weak he could barely stand. We rushed him to a vet, and the good news is that he will recover.

But there are still 1,999 dogs out there who need our help, and we cannot turn our backs on them. Please if you possibly can, donate generously to Network for Animals. Even a small donation would help.

For the animals,

P.S. We began working in Aspropyrgos four years ago, and since then, your donations have made a huge difference there. It may be hard to believe, but when we began, the estimated number of street dogs was 4,000. So, with the help of animal lovers like you, you can see that we have helped halve that number. We are making progress. Your donation today would get a big ‘efharisto’ from Greek dogs. Efharisto means ‘thank you’ in Greek. Efharisto Gloria!
