When we were alerted to the extremely tough life donkeys face in Kenya and told they are often cruelly mistreated by ignorant or uncaring owners…

We rushed to the East African country to help!

Within hours of our arrival, we rescued poor Kamonjo, a donkey who had been kept harnessed to a heavy cart for more than a year.

Little Kamonjo was bound to a home-made harness than could not be removed from the cart. For more than 12 months, stoic Kamonjo had pulled the loaded wagon during the day and remained harnessed to it throughout the night – and even had to drag the cart with him to find grazing and seek water.

Kamonjo was in a heartbreaking state with weeping sores on his rear, his back worn down to bare skin – and he was starving and emaciated.

Luckily, with the help of kind-hearted people like you, we were able to rescue Kamonjo in partnership with the Kenyan Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (KSPCA). The brave but weak little creature was taken to KSPCA’s donkey sanctuary where he received medical treatment and much-needed food.

And you should have seen the welcome the other donkeys gave Kamonjo. They called out to him and nuzzled him as if to say, "Welcome brother"!

Under Kenyan law Kamonjo must be returned to his callous owner who has been warned to stop the cruelty and will now be monitored. We will remove the sweet guy again at the first sign of neglect – this time for good. And we are having a proper harness made so he can at last be free at night.

There are thousands more donkeys suffering the cruelest of abuse in Kenya, and we and the KSPCA face enormous challenges but, with your help, we will fight to see that every single donkey in Kenya is humanely treated. We urgently need to fund search and rescue missions, buy medicines and food and, importantly, provide them safe haven when all else fails.

Please, if you possibly can, make a generous donation to Network for Animals today so we can provide help to Kenyan animals so desperately in need.

For the animals,

P.S. Since I wrote this, I have received an urgent plea for additional help because so many more donkeys have been found in need of rescuing. Please join our fight to care for these gentle creatures by donating generously today.
