The most disgustingly cruel abuse of cows, goats and horses is taking place in the African country of Mali. Unscrupulous black magic-practicing marabouts (‘holy men’) ritually torture cows, drive them into a fire pit and beat them as they burn to death in the flames. Horses have their fetlocks (foot joints) severed, are dumped into a pit and then stoned as they are buried alive.

These are not isolated incidents! This happens nearly every day!

People in search of a cure for infertility or those who want to win political office or get rich pay $820 (£605) for a horse or cow to use in the ritual, which is common throughout the country.

If the animal is a horse, its fate is to be buried alive. But before this happens, to make sure this poor, terrified creature has no chance of escape, men cut the horse’s fetlock joints on all four legs. That is like a human being held down and having their feet cut off at the ankles - while alive. Then the torture gets more intense as the men slice into the horse’s body: Fanatic supporters drink the blood and eat the organs while the ‘holy man’ recites prayers. Only then is the horse flung into a pit and buried alive.

Cows are also treated with extreme cruelty. Our video shows the entire ghastly process: the cow being driven into a fire and the poor creature’s desperate attempts to climb out of the pit while men beat her down and others throw stones at her. WARNING: Do not watch this video unless you have a strong stomach! We include it only because the cruelty is so extreme, some people might not believe it actually happens!

Goats are lined up before a long trench, tortured, stabbed and decapitated one by one before being thrown into the trench.

The Mali government is powerless to stop the torture, but WE WILL fight it!

In normal times, preventing this utter sadism would be the job of the Mali police, but brutal conflict has raged in Mali since 2012, with swaths of the vast country’s territory lying outside of government control. The ‘holy men’ responsible for the cruelty are 'Muslim' (please don’t think many Muslims would countenance such cruelty - these monsters are horrible exceptions) but their activities come at a time when attacks by armed Islamist extremists on civilians and government forces have intensified. For the police to try and stop the ritual sacrifices of animals would be suicide.

It sickens us to tell you that because of the lawless state of the nation, people from the neighboring countries of Niger, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast and Nigeria are making TOURIST TRIPS to Mali to sacrifice animals. We have no words!

But we do have a steely determination not to let such barbarity go unchallenged.

It may be difficult, but every day this goes unchallenged is a blot on all caring people. Our partner in Mali, Action pour le Renforcement des Activités Féminines (ARAF), works among the local communities helping women, teaching people about animal welfare and providing aid to abused animals. ARAF has the trust of the people and is willing to conduct outreach programs urging the people to turn their backs on the sickening brutality involved in such rituals.

We MUST URGENTLY send help to the innocent horses, goats and cows being tortured to death. They are at the mercy of brutal, callous ‘holy men’!

Mali is one of the poorest countries in the world and one of the largest in Africa. Simply getting about is costly, roads are bad and distances large, but there is no alternative but to visit every community we can and educate and convince the people not to tolerate such sickening abuse of animals.

Make no mistake: we must work to end this, and we must start now. It may take a long time because of the turmoil in Mali, but all journeys begin with a single step, and we are asking you to begin to stand up for the tortured animals of Mali right now. Please, if you possibly can, make a donation today. Every single animal saved from this horror is a victory for animal welfare and something to be celebrated.

As animal lovers, we know you deplore what is happening to horses, goats and cows in Mali. Because of mass unrest, the authorities are powerless, and we must do what they should be doing and that is finding ways to end such ritual sacrifices.

Your donation will be pivotal in getting this barbarity stopped. $7,500 (£5,500) will allow our team on the ground to reach out to local communities and begin the dangerous work of confronting the perpetrators. It is not going to be easy, but we have to do it for the animals because the only people fighting this appalling cruelty are ourselves and animal lovers like you. Please give generously today and join our fight.

For the animals,

P.S. They say one picture is worth a thousand words, but some of the pictures of these desperate animals being tortured are too horrible to show you. We cannot stand by and not fight this abomination. We could not delay in telling you about the agonizing torture of helpless animals - hacked, beaten and burned to death - who have no hope except us. Please donate today to help fight for the tortured animals of Mali.
