Street dogs in Cuba face agonizing deaths every day of their lives, so I went to see what I could do to help. I found a country where brave individuals care for street dogs, while government agents try to seize and kill them – using strychnine, one of the most painful poisons known to man.

HUNDREDS of dogs die in agony each month.

The volunteers who look after street dogs have no medicines and no surgical equipment. They can’t buy any because the government does not allow it, so they rely on animal lovers like you and me to help.

The Cuban government says sick animals must go to a government clinic, so I went to a clinic and offered them some medicines to help. I am 82 years old and not easily shocked, but what happened next stunned me…

Two government officials rushed to the clinic and THREW ME OUT!

This in a clinic that had no medicines and is reusing disposable syringes and gloves. It seems the officials would rather let dogs die than let me help them.

Now for the good news – I have joined forces with a group of amazing young people who have founded an organization called PAC, which stands for Protection of Animals in the City. They look after stray dogs and cats in Havana, run spay and neuter programs and keep dogs in safe houses, out of reach of the dog killers.

PAC is doing wonderful work. During our meeting, they received a call saying a cat had been stabbed and disemboweled. We rescued the cat and saved her life. What a great feeling! We renamed the cat Angel.

Now I hope that you will be an angel…

I have pledged to help PAC with medicine and equipment and of course, I need your help to do so. I know you care about animals, so if you possibly can, donate right now, so we can help all the little angels in Cuba that need us so badly.
