It’s been a cold, harsh winter in Cape Town and the thousands of dogs in the city’s slums are suffering from hunger, illness and cold.

Dogs have a hard life in the slums. People can barely feed themselves and dog food is simply beyond the household budget. The result is hundreds of abandoned dogs living in unbelievable squalor. The dogs have no medical care and no shelter, the only care they get is from volunteers like us.

Freezing to death is a daily reality for these dogs.

For four years, in partnership with volunteers from TEARS, a wonderful local organization, we have been helping street dogs in the crime-ridden slum where the dogs live, a desperately poor area called Vrygrond. Vrygrond means “free ground” in Afrikaans, but the only thing the animals get free is disease. With the help of animal lovers like you, we have made life better for hundreds of street dogs. But there is so much more to do.

My team recently visited a rubbish dump where dogs gather in a desperate search for food.

Dogs surrounded us, skinny, scared, shivering and starving.

These poor dogs are so hungry they are eating soiled nappies (diapers).

We spotted a discarded puppy curled up in a ball, too weak to move…

She had just hours to live. She looked up at us with puppy-dog eyes, pleading for help. Of course, we rescued her. Her new name is Maggie. She got immediate medical care and will be cared for at TEARS until a good home can be found for her.

With the help of animal lovers like you, I help send regular rescue missions to Vrygrond, even though it’s a dangerous thing to do because of random gang violence.

We can’t allow threats of violence to stop us when there are hundreds of dogs like Maggie in desperate need of food, shelter and medical care. We have to help them.

P.S. For the South African government animals are just not a priority. Animal welfare laws are ignored or badly enforced, resulting in massive cruelty. We have to help. Please give generously if you possibly can.
