Every day in the poorest areas of South Africa, we and our partners at Fallen Angels witness harrowing cruelty to innocent dogs.

On a recent search and rescue mission in Wellington, a poor farm area in the Western Cape, we were tipped off about abuse so bad, we could barely believe it.

A drunken and incredibly twisted man had tied up two dogs in his backyard and was deliberately starving them to death – all for his obscene entertainment.

When he was drunk, he took pleasure from kicking the helpless dogs
who were so weak from hunger, they collapsed.

We rescued these pitiful dogs and renamed them Germaine and Susan. The innocent creatures were in very bad shape, terrified, starved and skeletally thin. Just looking at them brought tears to our eyes. They had sores all over their painfully thin bodies and needed to be rushed away for immediate medical treatment.

Germaine and Susan had only ever known beatings, kickings and viciousness from humans and were so petrified that they cowered away in abject fear when we came near to help them. The only love they ever had was from each other. Their devotion to each other was so beautiful.

They say true love is selfless and Germaine proved it. When we picked up Susan, Germaine fought desperately to ‘protect’ her, clearly willing to die for her.

Germaine and Susan are now safe at the Fallen Angels shelter we support with the kind help of animal lovers like you. They are slowly and tentatively learning to trust humans and we hope they will find forever homes together. Please, if you possibly can, donate today to Network for Animals so we can help Germaine and Susan and so many other innocent abused dogs.

For the animals,
