In the slums of Vrygrond, living conditions are harsh and unforgiving. People have minimal to no access to food, water, proper care or shelter – so you can imagine how bad it is for the animals.

These animals are in desperate need of our help. They are falling victim to distemper and must also contend with skin diseases like mange and malnutrition.

We work in Vrygrond with TEARS, our long-standing partner in South Africa. Together, we face and deal with heartbreaking scenes: sick and dying dogs, puppies suckling starving mothers, and dogs bearing old, untreated, infected wounds from dog fights or stab wounds inflicted by gang members in the community. These animals are living a nightmare, battling a deadly outbreak of the canine distemper virus.

Among the countless animals resembling walking corpses, we found Nova…

She had mange so badly it caused a bacterial infection that made her skin rot and slough off, revealing painful, pus-filled cysts beneath necrotic flesh. The odor was unbearable, her eyes swollen shut, and she was so emaciated and weak she could not stand. Nova is also battling chronic ehrlichia, a tick-borne disease. Her sibling tragically succumbed to the same condition just one day before her rescue.

Our goal is to raise $10,000 (£8,170) to provide Nova and other forsaken animals the medical care they so desperately need. This includes vaccines to combat the distemper virus, treatment for mange, sterilization to address the over-population issue, and care for dogs with severe injuries and infections. We are determined to give Nova and countless others like her a fighting chance at life!

The consequences of the distemper virus are devastating and far-reaching. We have witnessed the heartbreaking sight of dogs reaching us too late; one merely a pup, another already convulsing from this deadly virus. We cannot let this happen again!
