As you read this, a crisis for dogs and cats is spiraling out of control in Serbia. Roaming the streets unsterilized and unwanted, they are left to breed indiscriminately, exacerbating a cycle of neglect, abuse and misery. In rural areas, misguided people routinely kill street animals in an attempt to control their populations, never considering sterilization as an option. Cats and dogs are strung up in trees to die, or have their legs or heads chopped off.

Many dogs are bred to guard livestock or hunt deer and rabbits, and when they are not being worked to the bone, they are beaten, chained, malnourished and neglected. Those “lucky” enough not to be used for cruel human pursuits scrounge for scraps on the streets, often having to fight each other for any rotten bit of waste they find.

As they fight for survival - every animal’s instinct - the bitter cycle continues. Litter after litter is born to struggle, suffer and succumb to the misery of homelessness and abject cruelty.

We MUST help these poor animals RIGHT NOW, and for that, we need YOU.

Serbia was one of the last European countries to adopt animal welfare laws, and very few people obey them. A lack of education among citizens and law enforcers alike means that animals are abused for fun, woefully neglected and killed in terrible ways. Some of the things our partners have told us will turn your stomach and I cannot bring myself to write about them on this page.

But amid all this savagery and heartbreak, there IS hope…

We work with several struggling animal shelters who rescue, shelter and care for as many dogs and cats as they can, all on their own dime, to try and keep them off the streets and away from death.

As you can imagine, these shelters are stretched far beyond their capacity, and many are on the brink of closure. We CANNOT allow that to happen because helpless animals - finally safe and free to sleep without fear - will find themselves back on the brutal streets.

Sterilization is a simple solution!

The most critical need right now, and for months and years to come, is sterilization. We MUST prevent the birth of more puppies and kittens into lives of suffering. We also need to feed, treat and provide warm, safe shelter for rescued cats and dogs.

As you read this, our partner, the Vucjak Shelter near Kragujevac in Serbia, finds itself in an crisis. They have 1500 dogs abandoned at their doorstep or cruelly tossed over their fences. 300 of those dogs need immediate sterilization.

Without immediate action, dogs at the shelter may find ways to breed, exacerbating an already overwhelming situation. The resultant population explosion would be a disaster for the shelter, stretching their resources even thinner.

For most of Vucjak’s 1,500 unwanted, neglected and abused dogs, it is their only beacon of hope. Left to fend for themselves on the unforgiving streets, these creatures would face death by car, by starvation or by deliberate cruelty.
