Blind and emaciated, 9-year-old Aurora had no idea what was going on when her owner chained her to the fence of our partner shelter, the Friend Animal Foundation (FAF) in Harare, in the dead of night.

When shelter workers arrived the next morning, they took her under their wing and rushed her to a vet. The starving dog was little more than a walking skeleton, barely able to stand. The vet said she would recover if she received long-term specialist care, but tragically, her blindness is permanent.

Yet as horrific as her condition was, Aurora is one of the lucky few – at least her owner tied her outside a shelter, rather than leaving her to die on the streets.

Aurora is safe at our partner shelter – but with 610 animals to care for, FAF is struggling to care for all the abandoned animals like her.

The truth is that callous, casual animal cruelty is shockingly common in Zimbabwe, a country in the middle of a financial collapse.

Now safe at FAF’s shelter, Aurora faces a long, costly road to recovery. But with 610 dogs and cats at the shelter vying for resources, FAF’s funds have been stretched nearly to breaking point.

Without crucial funds, they are being forced to turn animals away in their greatest time of need.

Without our help, this is what happens to abandoned dogs in Zimbabwe. Credit: FAF

Zimbabwe is in a crippling financial crisis caused by corruption and bad management. With almost 40% of the country’s population living on less than $2.15 (£1.65) per day, it is no wonder there is little left over for the animals.

Veterinary costs are skyrocketing because of the crisis and more and more people are abandoning their animals. Unless we can help raise funds to cover vet bills, our partner will be forced to leave more animals to suffer and die on the streets.

FAF relies on us – and animal-lovers like you – to feed and care for their 610 dogs and cats.

We have been supporting FAF for years, helping them survive a shelter shut-down during COVID, and literally rescuing them from closing down.
