The Philippine dog meat trade is responsible for the deaths of tens of thousands of dogs every year. These deaths are not quick. They are not painless. In fact, they are among the worst acts of animal cruelty performed on our planet today.
In 1981, I first visited the Philippines and witnessed the cruelty first-hand. Like my battle for the seals, I instinctively knew we couldn’t just reduce the suffering. It had to be stopped.
Mel Alipio has been by my side for more than 30 years. His unique resourcefulness and spirit have saved the lives of countless dogs, and helped changed the face of animal welfare in the Philippines.
And his battle is far from over.
