In an act of extreme cruelty, at least 4,000 street dogs were dumped in the Jordanian desert and left to die without food and water. For nearly a year, the local authorities have bickered about who is responsible while the dogs breed uncontrollably, suffer and die.
The dogs are always hungry and thirsty. Their only help has come from local volunteers – and now Network for Animals is aiding the efforts.

I visited this remote and desolate place near Safawi, close to the Syrian border. The heat is searing. Water is scarce. The dogs have dug burrows into the desert ground, trying to find shelter from the relentless sun and a place to hide their puppies from the heat.

Locals say people who were paid to spay and neuter them instead pocketed the money. They transported the puppies far from the communities where they might have found something to eat or someone willing to help them. Now they are stranded in a place where even a drink of water depends on a handful of volunteers. These kind souls have worked tirelessly to keep the dogs alive. Without their efforts, the suffering would be far worse.
But feeding and bringing water to thousands of dogs is an enormous undertaking.

We need to help keep supplies coming. The dogs need food and water today, and they will need them just as desperately tomorrow.
Winter is just around the corner and that will bring another ordeal. The dogs will face bitterly cold desert nights when temperatures can fall below freezing. Volunteers started building stone shelters but the authorities stopped them and the shelters remain incomplete.
There is nowhere else in Jordan to take the dogs. For now, we have to bring help to where they are.

And as volunteers work to meet their immediate needs, the population keeps growing.
Puppies are being born into hunger, thirst and hardship.
Witnessing the puppies’ suffering was heartbreaking. Their mothers already struggle to survive without puppies to care for. Every new litter means more vulnerable animals depending on the same overstretched volunteers. Because the dogs get no veterinary care, a single outbreak of disease could spread like wildfire, causing a major catastrophe.
Our first priority is to raise money to help bring food and water to the dogs. Beyond that, we need to work towards a large-scale spay and neuter program, bringing veterinary teams and facilities to this remote area to gradually bring the situation to manageable proportions.
That will take substantial resources. But we can begin helping now, with something as essential as food and water.
