In Lixouri, the second-largest town on the beautiful Greek island of Kefalonia, tiny puppies are being discarded by heartless farmers, leading to a street dog crisis.
Unsterilized dogs are giving birth to litter after litter of unwanted puppies.
The area is home to many small farms but the region’s farm dogs are rarely sterilized and mothers give birth to litter after litter. A farmer might keep one puppy from each litter – the rest are abandoned to die on the streets.
Our team on the ground is doing everything possible to save them, but we need your help to make a lasting difference for these tragic animals.
With no vet or municipal shelter in Lixouri, it is up to animal-lovers like us to break the cycle of suffering.
There are no resident vets in Lixouri, and the nearest clinic is 25 miles (40km) away and often swamped. Injured animals are sometimes forced to wait in agony for days before getting the crucial treatment and surgery they need.
There is no municipal shelter either – volunteers house some of the area’s street dogs in an abandoned building. They are doing everything they can to help the animals, but lack crucial food, medical supplies and veterinary expertise.
We met with the Mayor of Lixouri, who confirmed that a municipal shelter will be built at some time in the future, but there is no date or budget for it at the moment. This is a positive step in the right direction, but dogs and puppies are suffering now, and we must help them straight away.
Without help, these dogs could be lost to starvation, disease or car smashes.
Recently, we found three tiny, trembling puppies abandoned under an olive tree, barely old enough to walk, infested with ticks, and crying for their mother. We need to act fast: the puppies need medication, vet care, food and safety.
