Consecutive years of extreme drought in Zimbabwe have destroyed grazing lands and wiped out natural food sources. Thousands of donkeys are now on the brink of starvation – including the 105 donkeys cared for at MARES sanctuary and countless others living with low-income families who depend on them for survival.

There is an immediate, sustainable solution – but we need your help to make it happen.
Moringa trees grow quickly, thrive in drought, and are packed with essential nutrients that keep donkeys alive when everything else fails.
Thanks to Network for Animals’ supporters, MARES has already established a moringa plantation – and that plantation kept more than 500 donkeys alive during the worst of the drought, when no grass or hay could be found anywhere in Zimbabwe.
When desperate donkey owners had no way to feed their starving animals, MARES even provided emergency moringa feed to families who would otherwise have watched their donkeys die.

Droughts in Zimbabwe are becoming more frequent and intense, and donkeys are going hungry – and the plantation must be expanded as soon as possible.

Our GivingTuesday mission: plant 3,000 new moringa trees
This GivingTuesday, we are racing to plant another 3,000 moringa trees at MARES.
This expansion will provide enough food for all donkeys at the sanctuary, and support many more community donkeys who depend on MARES to survive.
Just $5 (£3.80) plants one life-saving moringa tree:
- $5 (£3.80) = 1 tree
- $50 (£38) = 10 trees
- $250 (£190) = 50 trees
- $500 (£380) = 100 trees – an entire row in the grove
With your support, we can plant additional moringa trees, creating a sustainable food source for Zimbabwe’s donkeys. Credit: NFA
With your help, we know we can reach our goal of 3,000 trees, giving Zimbabwe’s donkeys around 25 years’ worth of high-quality nutrition.
