Working donkeys in Arusha, Tanzania, desperately need your help.
Every week, more than 2,000 donkeys travel up to 12 miles (20 kilometers) beneath the blistering African sun to markets across the Arusha region, hauling crushing loads of firewood, charcoal and other goods and produce.
By the time they arrive, the animals are exhausted and often in agony. Heavy loads, crude harnesses and poorly fitted ox-yoke carts leave them with deep wounds on their necks, backs and legs. Untreated infections, painful abuse injuries and internal parasites also leave them suffering day after painful day.

Since 2022, together with our local partner, the Arusha Society for the Protection of Animals (ASPA), we have built shaded shelters and water troughs and provided vital mobile clinics across three of the busiest local markets in the region – Mirongoine, Lengijave and Oldonyosambu – bringing much-needed relief to more than 2,400 donkeys.
For years, the suffering of these donkeys went unseen.
Thanks to our supporters, that has begun to change.
Donkey owners have seen the difference our veterinary team makes. They are even telling us about other communities where working donkeys desperately need help.
That is how we discovered the market in Ngarenanyuki, where around 200 donkeys endure some of the worst welfare conditions we have seen in recent years. With no veterinary care available, these donkeys are being forced to work with painful, infected wounds.
But just as more donkeys than ever need our help, funding for our life-saving mobile clinics has run out.

Our mobile veterinary clinics provide vital treatment – deworming the donkeys, treating their injuries and educating donkey owners on more humane ways to handle and care for the donkeys they depend on.
Without your urgent support today, our monthly mobile clinics will have to stop until we raise more funds. This is a really serious situation because thousands of donkeys face losing the regular treatment they rely on – and the donkeys in Ngarenanyuki may never receive the veterinary care they need.
