In Jordan, life is tough for street dogs, because many people consider them pests that should be exterminated – they do not see them as creatures who feel pain and suffer. Thousands of street dogs live in Jordan and often they are just targets – to be poisoned, run over by cars for fun and never given food. We are making progress in our efforts to make life easier for Jordan’s street dogs, but right now, we need your help to deal with a very basic need – FOOD! We have helped improve the lives of many dogs (and cats) and encouraged compassion for animals in Jordan – but there is still much to do. On a recent campaign visit en-route to our partner, the Al Rahmeh shelter, situated close to Amman, our team saw hundreds of skinny dogs roaming the streets and digging in trash cans, searching for food.
In one particularly shocking case, our team spotted an extremely skinny dog, exhausted and despondent, lying in the desert sand and baking in the heat. The team immediately rushed to help. The dog was clearly near death from starvation. She was female, her teats were swollen, and she was obviously nursing puppies.
When our team gave her some food and water, she gratefully gobbled it up and disappeared into the shrubs to find and feed her pups. The Al Rahmeh shelter staff has since left food and water in the same spot for her and will attempt to rescue her and her puppies. We will keep you updated.
This is not an isolated incident. There are so many cases like this that the shelter is overwhelmed. For now, the best we can do is take food to them – and it is only thanks to the support of animal lovers like you that we can do this and work on long-term solutions.
