As Morocco suffers a devastating drought, 650+ dogs are desperate for a drop to drink

As Morocco enters its seventh consecutive year of drought, more than 650 dogs are facing a searing summer without the life-giving water they need to survive.

With no running water at our partner’s shelter in Tangier, the dogs need four large tankers of water every week to survive.

Our partner, SFT Sanctuary, is a haven for over 1,000 animals, including more than 650 rescue dogs. The shelter has no electricity or running water, relying on wellpoints and water deliveries to keep the animals alive.

But these wells have dried up just as the drought took a toll and now summer is in full swing and temperatures are soaring. Some days it reaches 95°F (35°C) and without sufficient water, the dogs will become dehydrated and die. To ensure the survival of the animals, SFT is forced to order four truckloads of water to be delivered to the sanctuary every week – a cost it is struggling to meet.

We are turning to animal-lovers like you to save Morocco’s dogs from thirst.

Drought or no drought, the SFT team continues to rescue animals in distress, doing everything they can to save lives – no matter the cost.

Dogs like Atlantic. This sweet, blind dog has endured nightmare cruelty. Atlantic got his name because when his owners discovered he couldn’t see, they tried to drown him in the Atlantic Ocean, rather than go through the ‘inconvenience’ of looking after a blind animal. Against all odds, Atlantic survived and was taken in by SFT, where he found safety, kindness and peace for the first time in his life.

The majority of the animals saved and cared for by SFT share similarly horrific pasts. But today, all of them are happy and safe, thanks to the team’s unwavering compassion and dedication.

After all the animals have been through, we cannot let them die now because there is no water to drink.

The lives of over 1,000 animals hang in the balance – but with your support, we will ensure they have the water they need to survive drought-stricken Morocco’s long, hot summer.
