On 7 January 2026, unprecedented flooding swept through Luznica in central Montenegro, devastating Pet-a-Tet, one of the country’s few truly humane dog and cat shelters.
Against all odds, they survived.
Because of courage, compassion and extraordinary teamwork, every dog and cat made it out alive. In the darkest hours of disaster, people showed up and lives were saved. That is the hope we want to share with you today.
But the story is far from over. Survival is only the beginning and you can be part of their future.
A Shelter Destroyed

Rescued by the shelter and with a severely injured leg that had to be amputated, three-legged Asja watched floodwaters surge through the place she believed would keep her safe forever. The nearby river burst its banks, sending icy, muddy water through kennels, medical rooms and staff housing.
Volunteers were cut off and roads vanished beneath the flood. The water rose relentlessly, all the way to the second floor. One 80-year-old resident told rescuers he had never seen flooding like this in his lifetime.
As temperatures dropped below zero, help rushed in from all directions. Local volunteers, emergency services, embassy teams and supporters refused to look away.
Dogs and cats were ferried to safety by boat and kayak. Sick and disabled animals were rushed to veterinary clinics. The shelter’s owner refused to leave until the very last animal was rescued.
By nightfall, every dog and cat was saved.

Now They Need a Future
Today, the animals are alive but scattered between overcrowded vet clinics, foster homes and temporary shelters already stretched to their limits. This includes our partner, Mali I Veliki Raj.
Up to $2500 (£1900) worth of food stores and medical supplies have been destroyed. Kennels, quarantine areas, medical facilities and staff accommodation are unusable. Electrical equipment is ruined and the rescue vehicle, essential for collecting strays and transporting animals to urgent vet care, is completely unsalvageable.
Refurbishment and repair bills are set to skyrocket.
Rebuilding will take time, resources and urgent support.
