It was well into the evening when our campaigner in Mindanao, Philippines got the call that started it all…
A horse fight was set to take place the very next day! But the location was almost impossibly remote – police insisted they accompany us due to the very real danger of a shootout.
After a six-hour drive, even from the “main” road, this fight felt different.
It was clear these horse fighters, these despicably cruel gamblers, were deadly serious about keeping their cruel profits.
Lookouts were posted everywhere.
In a venue so remote, so far from the city, vehicles of the gamblers still lined the dirt roadsides.
Forced to thread our way through, our presence was announced too soon.
Our team was heartsick to be unable to make arrests but equally thrilled to learn the horse fights had been suspended the moment they’d caught wind of us!
But your presence – made possible EVERY time you give to show your dedicated commitment to ending animal abuse wherever it exists – still made a big difference.
A critical signal had been sent that day, that NFA means business. That we WILL show up, with law enforcement, no matter how far-flung the location!
Organizers had halted not just that day’s fights, but also the remainder of the three-day event. They pulled up stakes! No more horses would suffer - at least on this occasion.
