A.P.A. El Refugio animal shelter
They were left to suffer. You can help save them.
In Montevideo, hundreds of dogs struggle to survive on the streets. Injured, starving and forgotten – many have nobody to help them.
Only one shelter is standing between these animals and unimaginable suffering: APA El Refugio.
But they need your help to rescue, treat and give these animals a second chance at a decent life.
Give them the urgent care, food and safety they desperately need.
Why we help them
- Hundreds of dogs and cats are in their care
- More animals are arrive all the time
- Many elderly, injured, disabled or critically ill dogs
- No government funding or support
- Severe financial pressure
What happens
Across Uruguay, abandonment is a daily reality for the country’s street dogs.
They are dumped on busy streets, thrown over shelter fences under the cover of darkness and left to suffer from untreated injuries and disease. Many are older dogs, discarded when they are no longer wanted.
Even worse, cruelty is rarely punished. For countless animals, suffering goes unseen and unanswered.
How your support helps
Supported by Network for Animals since 2018, APA El Refugio has become a lifeline for the most vulnerable animals.
No matter how sick, injured or old a dog may be, at this refuge they have been given a second chance. Because of supporters like you:
- Injured dogs receive life-saving treatment
- Abandoned puppies rescued before it’s too late
- Elderly animals are given comfort, care and dignity
Your generosity has helped:
- Rebuild kennels after fire damage
- Replace food and supplies lost in floods
- Sustain long-term care for vulnerable animals
But the need is overwhelming and growing each day.
The crisis in Uruguay is not over
The situation is getting worse.
More and more animals are abandoned every day, food and medicine costs continue to rise and the shelter is stretched beyond its limits.
