In Serbia, many dogs are bred for the cruel “sport” of trophy hunting, but if they are ‘unsatisfactory’ hunters, they are discarded like trash. If puppies are timid, gentle, or scared of gunshots, they are packed into a box and tossed into rivers or, if lucky, dumped at shelters. Breeders simply consider them to be a means to an end, so if they cannot be sold, they are just thrown away.

Vucjak Shelter in Cumic is a shelter that frequently finds discarded hunting dogs left on its doorstep or sometimes thrown over its fence, confused, hurt and whimpering. The shelter is inundated with abandoned, unwanted dogs - more than 1,500 of them. Vucjak Shelter operates almost 24 hours a day as they struggle to find enough time to care for all the animals, solve immediate animal crises, and sort out all the shelter's daily running needs.

But with your support we can help, and this is how…

One of the shelter’s most urgent immediate requirements is water for the dogs. At the moment, water is delivered in trucks and stored in tanks, and then the staff manually fills up canisters and distributes the water to thirsty animals. This takes a lot of time and resources that the team could use to prioritize other critical needs. There are so many dogs needing urgent, immediate care, but the staff needs to spend hours filling water bowls.

With your help, we will install a water system for the thirsty animals.

The systems will pump water from a well directly into dogs’ bowls and water stations, freeing up valuable time for staff to deal with important hands-on rescue work. We must install the water system as soon as possible, as needy animals are waiting for help right now, and the Vucjak team needs to get to them faster. With your support today, we will get the pump installed FAST.

If we can urgently raise $5,000 (£4,400), we can install a water system right away. Workers are ready to begin - as soon as we can raise the funds, we can instruct them to start. Please donate generously now.

There are many other issues the shelter faces: vet bills, food, waste management, sufficient shelter and dog kennels, and transportation are constant challenges. We promise to deal with as many of these issues as possible and, with time, massively ease the suffering of the animals who have found themselves discarded, alone and living in a shelter.

P.S. There is much work to do in Serbia, especially in rural areas where dogs are kept on short chains and in terrible conditions. They get no love - something that every dog desperately craves - and are left to languish alone, day after day. We plan on working with our partners on the ground to implement strategies to create a mentality of responsible dog ownership with the support of local authorities and media campaigns. But first - right now - we URGENTLY need to get water to the dogs at Vucjak Shelter. Please be as generous as you can.
