Starting Over Sanctuary (SOS)
Donkeys in Israel urgently need your help.
Donkeys and other animals are being rescued in critical condition after severe abuse, neglect and abandonment. Starting Over Sanctuary (SOS) is fighting every day to save lives – but they cannot do it without immediate support.
Why we help them
SOS is a rescue and rehabilitation center providing sanctuary to over 800 donkeys, along with hundreds of cats, dogs and other farm animals – all saved from abandonment, abuse and neglect.
The sanctuary is facing overwhelming and ongoing pressure from rising numbers of emergency rescues, alongside skyrocketing costs for food and life-saving veterinary care.
Without urgent support, many injured and vulnerable animals would not survive.
What happens
Across the region in central Israel where SOS operates, donkeys are routinely abused, abandoned and treated as disposable tools rather than living, feeling animals. Foals are also often ripped away from their mothers and left to suffer horrific cruelty.
Our partner rescues hundreds of donkeys suffering from:
- Starvation and severe malnutrition
- Physical abuse and traumatic injury
- Abandonment
- War-related injuries
- Exploitation and severe neglect
SOS now cares for hundreds of rescued donkeys, many arriving terrified, emaciated and critically injured. They require immediate treatment and long-term rehabilitation.
How your support helps
Your donation today helps provide:
- Emergency veterinary care
- Pain relief, wound care and critical medication
- Milk, hay and other nutritional support

Every contribution helps SOS continue responding to emergencies as they happen.
The crisis in Israel is not over
SOS continues to face heartbreaking emergencies involving:
- Foals tortured by children
- Donkeys attacked by predators after abandonment
- Abandoned and starving animals in remote areas
- Mass relocations of donkeys saved from abuse
- Hundreds of donkeys facing hunger during Israel’s worst drought in 100 years
With over 800 donkeys in care and hundreds of other rescued animals, the sanctuary is under continuous strain to provide food, medical treatment and safe shelter.
