A little while ago, the Network for Animals (NFA) team visited the Tom Ro Haven for Equines and Children in Cape Town, South Africa, a safe haven for horses and ponies in desperate need of help. Thanks to our supporters, we were able to provide the haven a donation of $1,000 (£750) to assist with much-needed food and medical care for rescued equines - like Moonlight, a gentle old fellow who was left to starve in a paddock by his owner.
The haven, run by founder, Gill McCulloch, with the help of her daughter, Stephanie, and caring volunteers, was established in 2012 to rescue abused and neglected horses and ponies, and to rehabilitate and rehome them. Currently, 18 equines are in their care. Gill and her team also care for 40 equines through their outreach work in low-income areas of Cape Town.
The haven also offers a healing program for children and adults suffering from physical and emotional trauma, working with these special equines to facilitate their healing by learning empathy and compassion. The therapy not only benefits the community, but the equines too, helping them to learn to trust humans again.
As always, it’s thanks to our supporters that we’re able to help animals in need all around the globe. Thank you for being a friend to the animals, and a friend to NFA. We (and Moonlight, and the rest of the horses and ponies!) are so appreciative of your support!
