Striving to Help Dogs All Over The World

  • April 5, 2017
  • News
  • Greece, Philippines, South Africa, United Kingdom

It has often been said that there is no love so loyal and unconditional as that which humans receive from dogs. Perhaps it is for this reason that we find it particularly painful to hear of these beautiful animals suffering in any way.

NFA is dedicated to crusading against animal suffering and cruelty wherever we see it, and much of our attention is devoted to dogs, no matter where they are in the world. Thanks to the continued generosity of our wonderful supporters, we are able to improve the lives of animals who would otherwise be suffering, and bring to justice the individuals who cause them harm.

The Philippine Dog Meat Trade

Some of the most harrowing work NFA does concerns the dog meat trade in The Philippines. Since 1998, Network for Animals has worked to end the brutal dog meat trade there. Tens of thousands of dogs, many of them stolen pets, are rounded up and slaughtered every year in barbaric conditions, with thousands of dogs dying during transport to slaughter, and the survivors having their throats cut in makeshift slaughterhouses. Despite new legislation, the industry continues to flourish because government enforcement is insufficiently resourced to deal with its scale.

NFA is determined to fight this every step of the way, and in the past two months alone we have had 3 dog meat traders arrested, performed raids on five restaurants, and spent hundreds of hours working on surveillance. None of this would have been possible without your help.

Thankfully, we have good news to report from The Philippines too, thanks to our dedicated team who are doing everything they can to improve the lives of animals. On World Animal Day, our team spent the day giving care and attention to animals in need of treatment, and were able to neuter 68 dogs and cats, and vaccinate more than 300 against diseases including rabies.

TEARS for South Africa

Another uplifting dog project we are delighted to be able to assist with is  The Emma Animal Rescue Society (TEARS), in South Africa, whose aim is to give the thousands of dogs there a happier, healthier life.

TEARS is a very small organisation and their dedicated  volunteers work tirelessly to improve the lives of dogs in impoverished areas of South Africa. Financial stability is a real concern TEARS,  so when Network For Animals  heard about the wonderful work they were doing, we knew we had to offer our support.

Our goal, with the help of our supporters, is to raise enough funds to enable TEARS to visit the impoverished township of Vrygrond every day for the next six months. Every single dog and cat will be vaccinated, be seen by a vet, and with the permission of the owner, will also be neutered or spayed. We anticipate a near 100% permission rate. TEARS also does its upmost to ensure no pet goes hungry, as well as offering  people advice on training and caring for their dogs.

Imagine the heartache of watching your pet suffer and being unable to do anything about it. This is why the work TEARS is doing is vital. It is truly changing the lives of dogs and their devoted owners. Network for Animals is privileged to be part of this wonderful project.

Trusty Paws in the UK

We are also proud to promote and support the work of projects closer to home, such as the Trusty Paws Clinic in the UK, which is run by veterinary students, and is dedicated to providing support to the dogs of the homeless and vulnerably housed.

Homelessness has soared by a staggering 50% since David Cameron came to power, with many people now in a situation which they never imagined themselves  in. On  a recent visit to Trusty Paws, NFA was able to meet some devoted owners, and their dogs, who they can’t bear to be parted from, even if means losing out on a place in a hostel.

Thanks to projects like Trusty Paws, owners who have fallen on hard times are able to access veterinary care and treatment for their beloved companions, as well as taking away large stocks of food for them. And thanks to your support, we were able to give a small grant, providing leads, harnesses and food to help Trusty Paws do their vital work.

The Greek Financial …& Animal Crisis

It has also recently come to NFA’s attention that due to the financial crisis in Greece, many dogs have been abandoned, and are being left to suffer and starve. We are not prepared to sit back and watch this happen, and are currently making plans to tackle this crisis, moving on from our work with Animal Rescue Kefalonia last year.

As our supporter, we will keep you updated on all of our progress and ask that you give as generously as you can to enable us to help these dogs, and indeed dogs in need all over the world. We can’t do any of this without you.
